Inca Winter Campout

The Inca tribe of the Indian Princesses had their annual Winter Camp-Out in Green Valley Lake near Big Bear. The weather was great for sledding, with lots of fast run and even a jump. At dinner on Saturday, braves and princesses were recognized for “Most Snow in Face,” “Longest Slide,” “Most Spins,” etc. During the talking stick ceremony, both the princesses and the braves said what they wanted in 2015. In addition to sledding, the girls had a “sleepover” in the main room, and played “clubhouse” in the bunk bed room. Everyone pitched in to help with the cooking. Sunday morning, the snow was perfect for making snowman and throwing snowballs. We are all looking forward to next year.

Star Nation- Holiday Trip to Soup Kitchen

Several Indian Princesses and their dads gave up a Saturday morning to help out the homeless and other needy families. We went to the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen in Santa Ana to assist in serving their morning meal. The volunteers also helped sort out, bag and distribute an actual ton of donated groceries from Second Harvest Food Bank. While it was hard work for a few hours that day, everyone left with satisfaction that they helped make this holiday season a little brighter for some less fortunate souls.

Santana Cherokee Support the Ronald McDonald House of Orange

The Mighty Cherokee Princess Tribe of the Santana Nation supported the Orange County Ronald McDonald House children and their families by bringing new, unwrapped toys and gifts. Our theme for the year is volunteering and we’re teaching the girls, and all of you, That it is always better to give than to receive fulfilling one of our aims, “To love my neighbor as myself”.

As you can see by the photos, the families did a great job of spreading the word to friends and family about the needs of the families at the Ronald McDonald House. I think the girls were rewarded ten fold about the need to give at this time of year. The Great Spirit is very proud of these fine young ladies!

Santana Nation Hupa Tribe Annual Charity project.

Congratulations to our Santana Nation Hupa. They held their annual kick-off event for their charity drive. The tribe made “no-sew” blankets that they delivered to the Tustin Area Senior Center’s Senior Santa Project. Members of the Police Department and senior center met with members of the Tustin Teens in Action, Orange County Adult Protective Services and Santana Hupa to accept their donations and place them under the senior center’s Christmas tree. According to Sarah Randall, recreation coordinator for the Tustin Area Senior Center, “We had a great turnout with tons of donations. We are so excited to start our donation drive.”

Through Dec. 23, donations can be dropped off at the Tustin Area Senior Center at 200 S. C St. or the Tustin Police Department at 300 Centennial Way. For more information, call 714-573-3107.

Santana Nation Turkey shoot a success!

This years Turkey shoot was a big success! We had 156 shooters from both guides and princesses come out and enjoy the opportunity to try their hand at shooting arrows at colorful turkey targets. Once again the CSUF Titan Archery team did a great job of handling this event in a safe manner. No injuries were reported other than the turkey targets! I’d like to thank Greg Assaf, our Santana Nation Chief, for coordinating with St. Jeanne De Lestonnac School as the location of this years event. We had many children from the school join us this year that gave the school some exposure to what we have to offer the community as a Longhouse. I’d also like to thank my fellow Cherokee brothers for their help. (you know who you are!)

There have been talks about having a Spring time archery event similar to the Turkey Shoot. As plans are drawn up, more info will go out to all Nations.

Annual Turkey Shoot

Save the date! November 15-16 we will be having our annual Turkey shoot. This is sponsored by the Santana Nation and war chiefed by the Cherokee. All Tribes and Nations of the Longhouse are envited to participate. This is a two day event with limited time slots. Dads are welcome to shoot too if they so choose. Kids color and shoot at their Turkey targets with real bows and arrows. No experience necessary. The event is run by the Cal State Fullerton Archery team. Once again the Santana Nation held it’s annual Turkey Shoot. A big Noonay goes to the Santana Cherokee for once again hosting this great event. Guides and Princesses lined up side by side to shoot at their colorfully colored turkey targets. All the kids were excited to get those bows in their hands. We would like to thank the CSUF archery team for running this event. It’s a great fundraiser for their team. Plans and dates are already being set for next year. Also a huge Noonay goes out to The Holy Family Cathedral for allowing us to once again use their facility for one of our events.

Trail Mates And Trail Blazers Programs

Recent Grads & Friends of Recent Grads of the Princess & Guides Program

A number of dads with sons or daughters who have graduated out of the guides and princess program have expressed an interest in resurrecting the Trail Blazers and Trail Mates Programs. These programs are for older boys or girls and their dads where they plan about 3 events a year. We all graduate from the program for a variety of reasons, but graduation comes at a time when our kids need even more opportunities to spend time with us as they grow older and need their fathers to provide a solid male role model to demonstrate to them how a man should behave in their presence. This program is designed to provide a few more years of fathers sharing time and forging stronger lifelong bonds with their kids.

The Trail Blazers and Trail Mates Program are designed to be less time consuming than the guide/princess program. Generally, one activity is an adventure such as camping, hiking, rafting , etc. One event is community service oriented. The number and type of events depend on the make-up of the kids in their particular Nation. Meetings would be necessary and would be run by the boys or girls with guidance from their dads. If there is an interest and we can put this together quickly, it would be great to have a presence at the up coming fall camp out.

Our NEW LONGHOUSE supports this program. If you are interested, please contact me ASAP. If you know other individuals who may be interested, please pass the word. Remember, Trail Blazers and Trail Mates are two separate programs.

Longhouse Reaches Major Milestone!

We wanted to take a moment to let everyone know that the new Longhouse has reached a major milestone with more than 1,000 dads and kids signed up in the new CircleBridge registration system. Thanks to all of you that took the time to register early.

Orange Street Fair fundraiser was a huge success!

Our first fundraising effort as a new Longhouse has paid off! We collected $3018.00 in parking fees and donations. A few people gave $10.00 (included in the $3018) donations because they had great memories of the program. Additionally, R.E.E. Insurance and The Real Estate Establishment has committed to an additional $300.00 donation so the total raised will be $3318.00. Can we get a Noo to the Nay!!

The Longhouse would like to thank the City of Orange, Irma Hernandez Deputy City Manager, Councilmen Denis Bilodeau and the following volunteers: Brad Renoult, Doug Hathaway, Don McCarroll, Dan Hughes, Gil Salazar, Chris McDonough, Scot Ikeda, Jeff Hardman, Mike Mitchell, Frank Murphy, Chris Bauer, Jim Azling, Steve Okamura, Daniel Alexander, Alan Roney, Jodi Roney, Julie Roney, Alton Klein, Dave Welch, Richard Chrystie, John Hanson, Norbert Lippert, Eric Bergeron, Jeff Oymaian, Dan Coffman, Mike Schmitt, Greg Assaf, Ron Berry, Ben Phillips, Ed Carter plus all the princesses that volunteered.

A few other points. Many, many people expressed their support and memories of our program. Several elderly people commented that their parents had been in the program before them and had wonderful childhood memories of their time spent in the program with Dad. We have a proud heritage. We also forged some new relationships with other non-profits. The Orange Senior Center and Orange Choral Music.

The Great Spirit is please with the Longhouse of the Orange Skies!
